The Sixth Round of the Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme
funded by DECC
The purpose of the Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme is to promote the efficient use of biomass for energy, by stimulating the early deployment of biomass fuelled heat and biomass combined heat and power projects. It will do this by awarding capital grants towards the cost of equipment in complete installations.
The round will be funded by DECC and is for England only
It is aimed at businesses, organisations and charities in the commercial, industrial and community sectors that are considering investing in biomass-fuelled heat and/or combined heat and power projects, including anaerobic digestion.
It is not aimed at householders or individuals who should consider the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, funded by DECC.
There is no minimum grant aid in any one application and the maximum is £500,000 per installation. An application form and Guidance notes can be downloaded here.
Please note that the applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, as and when they are received. The Project Board will meet on a monthly basis to make funding decisions, beginning at the end of January 2010 and continuing until all funding is allocated. The provisional closing date is 31st March 2010, although this may be extended if funding has not been allocated.
All enquiries should be addressed to biocapitalgrants@aeat.co.uk
There is a Frequently Asked Questions page and a Key Features page. Please refer back to this site at regular intervals while you prepare your application.

The Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme is part of the UK Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF), which aims to bring forward the demonstration and deployment of low carbon energy and energy efficiency technologies.
Further information about the ETF is available from:

The Carbon Trust
The Carbon Trust Biomass Heat Accelerator project has published a guide for potential users of biomass heating equipment covering details of the technology and advice on procurement and operation. In addition, there are a range of online resources available to help assess feasibility and procure a system such as lists of equipment and fuel suppliers.
If you are considering a large industrial or commercial application with a high usage factor then the Biomass Heat Accelerator project may be able to co-finance feasibility studies to help you specify and procure your project. Please contact Daniel.Sullivan@carbontrust.co.uk
Small or Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) OR any business that do not qualify for participation in the Carbon Reduction Commitment may be eligible for a zero interest loan from the Carbon Trust. Details are at http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/energy/Loans/default.htm
Workshops and seminars
A number of half and full day workshops are planned on various aspects of bio-energy, including site feasibility, fuel supply, and applying for grant funding from the Bio-Energy Capital Grants Scheme. The Carbon Trust will also be providing information on their Biomass Heat Accelerator programme.
These events are being organised by AEA in cooperation with Regional Development Agencies, the Forestry Commission and the Carbon Trust to help applicants develop projects and prepare applications.
